A Noob’s Guide To World of Warcraft

Played by more than 9 million people across the globe, World of Warcraft is not your ordinary button-mashing game. This online massively multiplayer role-playing game takes you on an adventure as one of many heroic mythical characters while exploring the vast, rich terrain. If you’re looking for the right place to study and train for your online adventure, look no further as this guide will give you all the must-know details to get started without looking like a total noob.

What is WoW?

As mentioned earlier, the game is classified as an MMORPG, which is short for massively multiplayer online role-playing game. MMO games are able to accommodate thousands of players in the same virtual platform simultaneously, allowing them to interact with each other in real-time.

The “role-playing” part means that each player’s character is attributed with a certain skill set and ability, which define’s his/her overall role. For instance, a Mage class character is capable of dishing out high-damage spells at long range, but has weak armor and HP. These qualities define the role of the Mage both in a single player adventure mode and party quests and boss hunts.

The game is set in a world called “Azeroth”, where lands are inhabited by a great number of races including humans, orcs, and elves. The population is generally divided into two factions – Alliance and Horde – and these two powerhouses battle each other for dominance over Azeroth.

Getting Started With the Actual Game

Picking a server. Every time you log in, you’ll be asked to pick the server you wish to access. If you wish to play your character with friends, make sure you know which server they are playing in otherwise you won’t be able to see them even if you are playing the same game. Players are allowed limited access to certain servers. However, if you need to change servers but do not wish to start over with another character, you can purchase a WoW prepaid card to pay for transfer fees.

Creating a character. Browsing upon the available character races you can choose from, you’ll notice a minute difference in stats. Furthermore, the race you decide to go with will determine whether you’ll be put into the Horde faction or the Alliance faction. Aside from Race, you will also be asked to pick a Class for your character, which is broken up into Death Knight, Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Monk, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, and Warrior. The Class you pick will predominantly determine what your character can do in-game. For instance, an Elf druid will spend most of his/her time supporting teammates and staying on the sidelines during boss fights.
